Penstemon Blackbird commonly known as Beard Tongue is a pretty, bushy semi evergreen perennial with upright habit. Bearing mid green lance shaped leaves which have striking red coloured stems and in the months of July all the way through until October the Penstemon Blackbird will bloom tall erect racemes of tubular, trumpet like purple/red tinged flowers which create a wonderful display in a light breeze, planted together.
Suiting many garden types and planting locations including flower beds and borders, or wall side planting where the erect racemes of colour create a beautiful display. We recommend planting them in groups, as when flowering the Penstemon will create a flood of colour.
Penstemon Blackbird care
Plant the Penstemon Blackbird in a sunny, partially shaded area with moist, well drained soils where it will thrive. Can require winter protection from cold, dry winters. Once the plant has finished flowering, to maintain its strong growth we recommend to deadhead the plant. In winter cut the perennial back to the base of the plant.
