Callistemon Laevis, also known as the ‘Bottlebrush’ plant, is an evergreen shrub that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is native to Australia and is a popular ornamental plant in many parts of the world. This plant typically grows up to 8 metres tall and 4 metres wide, but it can be pruned to a smaller size.
The leaves are small and narrow and are dark green in colour and have a glossy texture. The leaves are arranged alternately along the stem, and they give the plant a dense and bushy appearance.
The most distinctive feature of the this Callistemon is its flowers. They are arranged in cylindrical clusters that resemble a bottlebrush, hence the common name. The flowers are typically red in colour and are usually produced in the Spring and Summer months, but in some regions, they can bloom throughout the year.
Callistemon Laevis care
To ensure your Callistemon thrives, plant it in a location that receives full sun. It performs best in well-drained soil and can adapt to a variety of soil types, including sandy or slightly acidic conditions. Regular watering is important, particularly during dry spells, to keep the plant healthy and support its vibrant flowering.
Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring can promote robust growth and enhance blooming. Pruning should be done after flowering, typically in late summer or early autumn, to remove spent blooms and shape the plant, which encourages a fuller growth habit and more blooms in the following season. In colder climates, a layer of mulch around the base of the plant can provide winter protection. With proper care, this cultivar will deliver a continuous display of soft mauve bottlebrush flowers, adding colour and texture to your garden throughout the growing season.
