Leucothoe Scarletta, commonly known as Dog Hobble is a bushy, spreading evergreen shrub with pointed oval shaped leaves which are green with bright red edges when young, and when maturing these turn a lovely dark green and bronze/red colour in the autumn. In the months of April and May the Leucothoe Scarletta blooms small white flowers which are just an added bonus to this plant, grown simply for its foliage.

A good shrub for low maintenance gardens and can be planted on banks or slopes or edging of borders where the low ground cover can create a wonderful colour for visitors to admire. Can also be grown in a container/as a potted plant which can then be planted in shaded balconies or gardens without grass.

Leucothoe Scarletta care

Plant the Leucothoe Scarletta in a shaded area of the garden with moist, well drained, acidic soils where it will thrive. This shrub is easy to grow and suitable for both beginner and expert gardeners alike as it is generally disease and pest free and requiring minimal to no pruning at all. Good for a low maintenance garden. Naturally the Leucothoe Scarletta will form a good framework meaning no pruning although may occasionally need a little prune to remove any branches which look out of place, prune these in winter months.
