Ilex Aquifolium J.C Van Tol, commonly known as Holly is a bushy, evergreen large shrub or small tree with oval shaped almost spineless, dark green leaves with young purple shoots. The foliage is the main interest on the Ilex shrubs although the flowers and berries are that extra gem! In the months of May and June the Ilex Aquifolium J.C Van Tol blooms tiny white flowers closely followed by shiny, bright red berries.
Often grown as a specimen shrub/small tree which will create a fantastic large sight. Often planted in architectural flower beds and borders and in a variety of garden types and planting schemes.
Ilex Aquifolium J.C Van Tol care
Plant the Ilex Aquifolium J.C Van Tol in a sunny, partially shaded location with moist, well drained soil. The Ilex requires none to very little pruning which makes a perfect low maintenance shrub and perfect for both beginners and expert gardeners alike. If grown as a specimen we would only recommend pruning in spring months any branches which grow out of the natural framework of the plant, once pruned, apply a good amount of mulch or quality garden compost at the base of the plant.
