Hakonechloa Macra ‘Aureola’, commonly known as golden hakonechloa is a deciduous, tufted grass plant which forms long arching, narrow leaves which are green, striped with a summer yellow colour, creating a fantastic display. In the autumn and winter months, the leaves begin to tinge red which adds further interest to the plant. Flowers are produced in August and October on erect stems of green flowers, although the foliage is the real star of the show.

Plant in groups to create a wonderful colour drift, often planted in flower beds and borders, a range of low maintenance schemes and can make a brilliant container plant, perfect for a balcony or non-grass garden.

Hakonechloa Macra ‘Aureola’ care

Plant the Hakonechloa Macra ‘Aureola’ in partial shade and in moist, well drained soils where it will thrive. When planting this low maintenance grass plant, use good quality garden compost in the hole. Known to be disease and pest free and needing a simple, light prune in late winter months. Simply cut back the old flowered stems and any dead or damaged foliage right to the bases, making sure to apply a mulch at the base once pruned.
