Fothergilla Major, commonly known as American which hazel is a fragrant, bushy, deciduous shrub which has broad oval shaped leaves which turn stunning colours in autumn months, the leaves turn a striking fire red, orange and yellow making a real delight for the garden. In the months of May and June the Fothergilla Major produces small spikes of bottlebrush like, white flowers which are softly scented.

Can be planted in almost any garden or setting, making the most impact in a shrub border where the wonderful colours really stand out. Other recommended planting locations include low maintenance borders, informal gardens and cottage planting schemes.

Fothergilla Major care

Plant the Fothergilla Major in a sunny, partially shaded location with moist, well drained soil where it will thrive. Being hardy and awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit makes it a perfect candidate for the average UK garden! Generally disease and pest free and requiring some pruning makes a perfect shrub for both beginners and experienced gardeners alike. In late winter we recommend to remove any dead or damages branches of the plant, and any branches which begin to misshape the plant unnaturally. Once pruned cover the base of the plant with good quality mulch or garden compost.
