Clethra Alnifolia, commonly known as Sweet Pepperbush, is a deciduous shrub celebrated for its fragrant, creamy-white flower spikes and attractive foliage. This native plant features upright clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that bloom from mid-summer to early autumn, filling the garden with a sweet, honey-like fragrance. The foliage is glossy and dark green, turning yellow in the autumn, which adds seasonal interest. Clethra alnifolia typically grows to a height of 2.5 metres with a similar spread, making it an excellent choice for garden beds, borders, or naturalised areas.
Clethra alnifolia is valued for its delightful, fragrant blooms and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, offering both aesthetic and ecological benefits.
Clethra Alnifolia care
Plant the Clethra Alnifolia in a sunny, partially shaded area of the garden with moist, well drained soils where it will thrive. Known to be generally disease and pest free and low maintenance makes the Clethra a good garden plant for gardeners of all abilities. You may need in winter to remove dead or damaged branches and a few of the older stems but nothing much as it will grow naturally into a lovely, strong shape by itself. Once pruned apply a generous amount of mulch to the base of the plant.
