Berberis Harlequin commonly known as Barberry is a bushy deciduous shrub with oval shaped leaves of beautiful deep purple with regular splashes of creamy yellow and light pink. In autumn time these leaves begin turning into a deep red colour.

In the months of April and May the Berberis Harlequin produces wonderful clusters of small pale yellow flower heads, adding that extra bit of colour to the shrub, followed by dark red berries, a firm favourite with birds and wildlife. This shrub can look good planted in beds and borders, used as hedging, screening and informal gardens.

Berberis Harlequin care

The Berberis Harlequin loves being planted in a sunny location and moist soil where it will thrive. Being generally disease and pest free and requiring little pruning this Berberis makes a perfect low maintenance shrub ideal for both beginners and experienced gardeners. We would recommend simply pruning any branches you wish to remove to better shape the shrubs growth and further encourage bushy growth in the winter months after berries have been produced.
