Akebia Quinata, commonly known as the ‘Chocolate Vine’, is an attractive and vigorous climbing vine renowned for its unique foliage and fragrant flowers. This deciduous vine features striking, palmate leaves with five leaflets that turn a lovely shade of purple in the autumn. The plant blooms in mid to late spring, producing clusters of tubular, chocolate-purple flowers with a subtle vanilla scent that adds a pleasant fragrance to your garden. The flowers are followed by ornamental, sausage-shaped fruit that adds interest through the growing season. Akebia Quinata typically grows to a height of 12 metres or more, making it ideal for covering trellises, arbors, or fences.

Akebia Quinata Care

To ensure your Akebia Quinata thrives, plant it in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types but prefers well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring can support healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Pruning is generally minimal but can be done to control the vine’s growth and remove any dead or damaged wood.  In colder climates, mulch around the base of the plant can offer some protection from frost. With proper care, Akebia Quinata will provide a delightful floral display, enhancing your garden throughout the growing season.
