Size really does matter when it comes to planting ideas for your garden.
Some gardens are an awkward shape or narrow and overlooked which means they need a practical approach.
Different plant combinations can be made to work well in smaller spaces and will create an affective display.
Large thick shrubs and big blocks of plants may fill out the borders in larger gardens but in smaller gardens they could block the line of sight and fill up precious available space very quickly. Instead opt for ornamental shrubs or trees that can be kept in pots and used to decorate an area.
Evergreens can be used to create focal points throughout the available space and give the initial structure to the garden design. Gardenia has gorgeous scented blooms and glossy leaves and mirror bush will add splashes of colour with bright green or pink varieties, they do prefer warmer climates so may need to be kept in pots. Azaleas are an early flowering evergreen that loves shade so perfect for brightening up the shady partys of your garden.
Next, think about using climbers to make good use of the vertical space available and to draw the eye up. Clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine are popular choices and will give gorgeous scents. Also using vertically growing plants will add colour at varying levels. Lillies are easy to grow and look classy and attractive, Gladioli boast colourful blooms from Spring through Autumn and Dahlias will add interest during the hot summer months.
If your garden is over-looked you can use trees to create privacy and due to their height, they will bring some grandeur and glamour to the garden too. Magnolia trees come in smaller varieties that will suit a small garden or ornamental cherry trees can work well with beautiful spring blossoms. They can be decorated with some simple fairy lights for a touch of evening sparkle.
When you have some structure in place you can start to think about texture. Create movement with some grasses or bamboo, these are also great for privacy.
Something to remember: when designing a smaller garden is to provide a strong structure without over- compensating. Now you have some evergreens to punctuate you can add some focus with plants that boast interesting shapes. Ferns are an excellent choice and are easy to maintain.
To finish the design, you could add some sprinklings of colour with dainty flowers dotted in and around your other plants. Look for flowers with small blooms and light airy texture that will fill in gaps without overpowering the garden. Gypsophilia would be an excellent choice.
Think about using space wisely, for example hanging baskets can be placed around the garden and used to decorate the front or rear aspect of your home. Tall bird feeders can be placed in garden borders without taking up much space.
